About Department

Ayurveda is the most ancient, systematic medical system, dating back to 5000 years ago, and it has stood the test of time till today.  Ayurveda comprises two words – Ayu denoting Life, and Veda, implying knowledge or science.

The “Knowledge of Life” and all it encompasses is included in the entirety of Ayurveda. Why we are born, how our lives and body systems are interconnected with the natural world around us, the origins of the universe and life, the changes of time and seasons, the way to live an ideal life, philosophy, plant and animal science, human science and medicine, psychology, education, social and spiritual health, scientific symposiums, and others are all included in Ayurveda.

Today, Ayurved is practiced widely in India and worldwide in hospitals, clinics, PHCs and other healthcare centres. The practice involves the treatment of diseases using internal and external medicine, Panchakarma and allied therapies, Ayurvedic surgical interventions, ayurvedic ANC and PNC care, pediatric healthcare through Ayurveda, Ayurvedic Nutrition and Lifestyle modification, Ayurvedic psychiatry (Manas Roga Chikitsa), Public health interventions, school health interventions, ENT and ophthalmic medicine, Ayurvedic Pre-conceptional Counselling and Therapy, Preventive and health-promoting Rasayana -Vajeekaran therapy, and many more.

In every instance, personalized medicine tailor-made by the doctor for the individual patient’s body constitution, genetic lineage, geography, and lifestyle is integral to Ayurvedic treatment principles. The treatment is multifaceted and intricate – focused on the root cause of the disease condition by breaking the pathological complex.

In short, the aim of Ayurveda is stated as:

स्वस्थस्य स्वास्थ्य रक्षणं आतुरस्य विकार प्रशमनं च ll

– Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana, 30/26

Ayurveda aims to maintain (and promote) the health of the healthy and cure the diseases of the ill.

The primary focus is prevention by encouraging practices that promote mental, social, physical, and spiritual health. If disease arises, Also, Ayurveda embarks on the journey to restore the patient’s normal health.
